Are the rulings on wiping over leather socks different from the rulings on wiping over regular socks?

The khuff (leather slipper) is made of leather, while the jawrab (sock) is woven from wool or fabric. The preponderant opinion is that the rulings for wiping over both are the same, even if many scholars have differed on this. Some scholars stipulated for the validity of wiping over socks that they must have soles (mun'alayn) or that their outer and inner layers be made of leather. Others did not permit wiping over them unless they had soles. In summary: if the socks are leather-covered (mujalladain) or have soles (mun'alain), wiping is permissible without dispute. If they are thin and transparent, it is impermissible by consensus. If they are thick but do not have soles or are not leather-covered, then there is a difference of opinion.
