Is a cotton sock, and other than it, to be treated the same as a leather slipper (khuff) in the ruling on wiping over them, taking into account that it is usually not possible to walk continuously in them, and is it called a khuff? And is it stipulated that the khuff prevents water from penetrating it, and can this condition be derived from the Qur'an and Sunnah?

Wiping over socks is permissible according to us. The difference between them and leather slippers (khuffayn) is that the slipper is made of leather while the sock is made of wool. This difference has no bearing in Islamic law. The need to wipe over socks is the same as the need to wipe over leather slippers. Scholars have differed regarding the permissibility of wiping over thin socks, and the preponderant opinion is that it is permissible. As for the condition of being able to walk continuously in the socks, they must be thick. The criterion for the ability to walk continuously is what is customary for those who wear leather slippers in places of descent and for needs. As for the condition of preventing water penetration, the preponderant opinion is that it is not considered, because it is a distinction that has no effect.
