Is the Earth considered a planet in the understanding of the Qur’an, and if so, how can this be reconciled with the verses that describe planets as adornments?
Allah made the planets as adornment for the heavens, as missiles against devils, and as guides for paths. In Quranic terminology, they are stars. Thus, the Earth is neither a star nor a planet. As for modern scientists, planets are dark bodies that do not produce heat and light but rather reflect the sun's light, whereas stars are giant, luminous balls of hot gases that produce their own heat and light. According to them, therefore, the Earth is a planet.
