How can there be relief for a person afflicted with an unremitting trial, what is the appropriate supplication for them, and is there anything in this question that angers Allah?

It is legislated for one who is afflicted to make abundant supplication and ask Allah to remove the affliction, for supplication is an effective means of lifting tribulation. Allah Almighty is too shy to turn away His servant's hands empty. There are texts that indicate Allah answers supplication, such as the supplication of the people of the cave and Yunus (peace be upon him). Even if the response is not outwardly realized, supplication does not go in vain. Either Allah hastens the fulfillment of the need, or saves it for the Hereafter, or averts from him an evil equivalent to it, as long as the supplicant does not become impatient and despair. If the situation usually does not change, such as the amputation of a limb, supplication benefits by bringing contentment, patience, and compensation with something better than what was lost.
