The question

Is it permissible to take out a new loan from the British bank HSBC to deposit it in an Islamic bank in the country, in order to benefit from the difference in returns, and thereby compensate for a portion of a previous loss in the value of a loan due to exchange rate fluctuations?

The answer

It is not permissible to take an interest-based loan, as dealing in usury is among the destructive sins, according to the Almighty's saying: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger." One must avoid borrowing as much as possible, even if it is through a permissible means. Indeed, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, refrained from performing the funeral prayer for one who was in debt, as a warning against debt.
