What is the definition of courage in Islam? Is it the absence of fear, or intimidating the enemy, or demonstrating firmness and severity, or the ability to deter the enemy? Is there a Quranic text or a noble Prophetic tradition that clarifies this? Which is better: abundance of knowledge or abundance of courage? And what are the scientific and practical steps to acquire the attribute of courage?

Ibn al-Qayyim defined courage as the steadfastness of the heart in the face of calamities, and it differs from strength. Indeed, the Siddiq (Abu Bakr) was the most courageous of the Ummah after the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The sacred texts have encouraged strength and courage. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most courageous of people, and his provision was placed under the shade of his spear. Allah loves the courageous who fight in His cause and dislikes cowards. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to seek refuge from cowardice. Courage and strength are virtuous characteristics through which religion is spread. Allah established religion through proof and clear evidence, and by the sword. There is a difference between seeking knowledge and courage. Seeking knowledge is an obligation and an act of closeness for believers, whereas courage is a common trait that can be acquired by accustoming oneself to daring and supplicating to Allah.
