What is meant by the jilbab from a religious perspective?

In Arabic, "jilbab" refers to a garment that covers the entire body, or a headscarf (khimar), or an outer garment worn over other clothes, like a wrap (milhafah). It is mentioned in the Quran in the plural form in the verse: {O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments (jalabib)} (Quran 33:59). It is larger than a khimar, and some say it is a cloak (rida'). There is a difference of opinion on how it should be brought down (idna'). Some say the woman should wrap it around herself so that only one eye is visible. Others say it should be wrapped over the forehead and drawn down over the nose, and even if both eyes are visible, it should cover the chest and most of the face. In Islamic legal terms, the jilbab is the garment that covers the entire body, whether it is a milhafah, an abaya, or a ملاءة (mula'ah - a type of sheet/wrap).
