The jurists differed on the ruling concerning a non-Muslim entering a mosque. The preponderant opinion is that it is permissible if there is an overriding benefit, such as inviting the non-Muslim to Islam, warding off their harm from Muslims, or correcting their negative perception of Islam. They cited as evidence the hadith of Thumamah ibn Uthal, who embraced Islam after being tied to a pillar in the mosque.

First Opinion: It is permissible for a non-Muslim to enter all mosques, including al-Masjid al-Haram (Hanafis). Second Opinion: It is permissible for non-Muslims to enter mosques with the permission of Muslims, with the exception of al-Masjid al-Haram and any mosque within the Sacred Precinct (Haram) (Shafi'is and one narration from Ahmad). Third Opinion: It is not permissible for a non-Muslim to enter any mosque (a narration from Ahmad and some people of Madinah). Fourth Opinion: A non-Muslim is prohibited from entering a mosque except for a necessary task (Malikis).
