How is a woman shrouded if she dies?

The madhhabs agreed upon the desirability of shrouding a woman in five garments, which is the opinion of most scholars. The details are: an izar (waist wrapper), a khimar (head covering), a qamis (shirt), and two lafafas (wrappers). They based this on the hadith of Umm Kulthum, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, which is supported by a narration from Umm Atiyyah. Generally, it is desirable for a woman to increase her covering after death, just as she did in life. However, Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen holds that if the hadith regarding the five garments is not authenticated, then the default is equality between men and women in rulings.
