Is it permissible to sit in gatherings of backbiting while being preoccupied from them, and to go out to the mixed market with men without need?

A Muslim should remain steadfast in faith by frequently supplicating with prayers such as: "O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion," and "O Protector of Islam and its people, keep me steadfast upon it until I meet You."

It is not permissible to sit in gatherings of backbiting (ghibah) and tale-bearing (namimah), even if one is preoccupied and not participating with them. This is because the presence of a Muslim in a place of wrongdoing is forbidden, unless for a valid purpose like denouncing it. Allah the Almighty said: "And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the recollection with the wrongdoing people." (Al-An'am: 68)

Fear of being labeled "extreme" does not justify sitting in such gatherings. Rather, one's concern should be to please Allah. For whoever seeks Allah's pleasure despite people's displeasure, Allah will spare him the trouble of people.

Going to the market is permissible with Islamic regulations, but it is better to avoid it unless necessary, as markets are the most disliked places to Allah.

Going out for recreation should be in places free from forbidden (shar'i) matters. One must be careful not to be lax in religion just to please family.

A Muslim should be an example for his family and strive to guide them in the best manner, by teaching the Quran and gradually offering advice, recalling the virtue of guiding people.
