Is sitting with one's cousin, despite not wanting to hear her speak, considered a form of hypocrisy?
If a person's speech contains reprehensible matters, then one must denounce them and admonish him. If he does not desist, then it is not permissible to sit with him, for Allah Almighty says: "And He has already revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and ridiculed, do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, in that case, you would be like them." Sitting without denouncing is considered dissimulation (mudahanah), which is forbidden and a characteristic of the hypocrites. It means associating with a wicked person and showing satisfaction with his actions without denouncing them. As for leniency (mudaraah), it is a commendable quality, and it means being gentle with a person to extract the truth from him or turn him away from falsehood. If the conversation is permissible but without benefit, there is no harm in sitting, while trying to direct the conversation towards what is beneficial. It is better not to prolong the sitting if it continues to be about trivial matters, as it may deaden the heart.
