What is your opinion of Sheikh Shu‘ayb al-Arna’ut, and do you recommend relying on his tahqiqs and takhrijs?
Shaykh Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut is a well-known Hadith scholar with commendable critical editions. However, like other Hadith scholars, he makes both correct and incorrect judgments regarding Hadith. A specialized student of knowledge can examine his statements and those of others and adopt what he deems correct. As for one who has not reached this level, he should follow someone whose knowledge and piety he trusts. It is preferable to follow the earlier Hadith Imams such as Ibn Abd al-Barr, Ibn Hajar, al-Nawawi, and their likes, or those who preceded them like Imam Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Abu Zur'ah, and Abu Hatim al-Raziyyan, due to their vast knowledge and expertise in this discipline.
