Is it permissible for i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) to take place in two secluded locations outside the mosque that were formerly used for prayer before the completion of the mosque's construction?

I'tikaf is to stay in a mosque for the obedience of Allah. I'tikaf is not valid for men outside of a mosque, by agreement of the scholars. Allah says: "And do not have sexual relations with them while you are in I'tikaf in the mosques." This verse specifies I'tikaf to be in mosques. Also, it is part of the Sunnah for the one observing I'tikaf not to leave [the mosque] except for a human need, and there is no I'tikaf except in a congregational mosque.

As for a room connected to the mosque, in determining what falls under the ruling of a mosque and what does not, it is said: 1. If the room was prepared to be a part of the mosque for prayer, then it has the rulings of a mosque. However, if it was for other purposes, such as teaching or living, it does not take the ruling of a mosque. 2. If the intention of the builder is unknown, the basic principle is that whatever is within the mosque's fence and has a door opening onto it, has the ruling of a mosque. 3. The courtyard and open area surrounded by the mosque's fence have the ruling of a mosque, just like the mosque's roof and its minaret connected to it from the inside.

Some scholars are of the view that people's custom makes rooms inside mosques a part of the mosque. However, it is more cautious for the one observing I'tikaf not to perform I'tikaf in them if they were built as a room for the Imam or for other purposes.
