The Hanafis hold that very young boys and girls have no 'awrah (intimate parts that must be covered), with some defining this young age as four years or less. Then, from four to ten years, their 'awrah is considered to be similar to the more prominent 'awrah of an adult. After ten years, their 'awrah is the same as that of adults.

The Malikis believe that a child aged eight years or less has no 'awrah. Thus, a woman may look at all parts of his body while he is alive and may wash his entire body when he is dead. She may look at the entire body of a child between nine and twelve years old, but she may not wash him. A boy aged thirteen years or older has the same 'awrah as an adult man. As for a young girl: up to the age of two years and eight months, she has no 'awrah if she is still breastfed. A non-breastfed girl who has not reached the age of sexual desire has no 'awrah in terms of looking at her. However, concerning touching, her 'awrah is like that of a woman, so a man is not permitted to wash her. As for a girl who incites sexual desire, her 'awrah is like that of a woman in terms of looking and washing.

The soundest opinion among the Shafi'is is that it is permissible to look at a young girl who does not incite sexual desire, because she is not a source of lust, except for her private parts, which are not permissible to look at. The private parts of a young boy are like those of a young girl, according to the relied-upon opinion. A pubescent boy's gaze at a non-mahram woman is like that of an adult non-mahram man, so it is not permissible for a woman to expose herself to him. A non-pubescent boy who has not reached an age where he can describe what he sees is considered as non-existent, or if he has reached that age but without desire, he is like a mahram. If he has reached that age with desire, he is like an adult.

The Hanbalis state that a child less than seven years old has no 'awrah, so it is permissible to look at and touch all parts of his body. For a child older than that, up to before nine years old: if he is a male, his 'awrah is the front and back private parts, both in prayer and outside of it. If she is a female, her 'awrah in prayer is between the navel and the knee. Outside of prayer, for mahrams, it is also between the navel and the knee. For non-mahram men, her entire body is 'awrah except for the face, neck, head, hands up to the elbow, shins, and feet.
