What is the soul (ruh) in Islam, who created it, and what are its limits?

The soul is created, and knowledge of its essence is exclusively within the domain of God, as stated in His Almighty words: (And they ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And you have not been given of knowledge except a little.") Descriptions of the soul have been mentioned in the Qur'an and Sunnah, including: its قبض (seizing/taking), وفاة (passing away), and that it is صفد (chained/fettered), تكفن (shrouded), تجيء وتذهب (comes and goes), تصعد وتهبط (ascends and descends), and تسل (extracted/drawn out). God breathed the soul into Adam, and He sends the angel to breathe it into the fetus. At the time of death, the soul is seized from below and received by the angels, and the angels ascend with it to the heavens. The manner of its ascent differs according to the state of the believer and the disbeliever. In the End of Times, a good wind will seize the soul of every believer. During sleep, the soul is partially seized; some of it is retained while other parts are released.
