What is the ruling on a husband who gives his wife money and then takes it back from her without her knowledge or consent?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the wife takes possession of the money that her husband has given her, either actually or constructively, then the husband is not permitted to revoke it, and the gift becomes binding. However, if possession has not been taken, the gift is not binding according to most jurists. Scholars have differed regarding a spouse's ability to revoke a gift given to the other spouse, and regarding the necessity of possession for a gift between spouses to be binding. Some are of the opinion that revocation is not permissible at all, while others believe that the wife may revoke it but the husband may not. They also differed on theacy of physical possession and taking possession; some did not require it between spouses, while others did.
