What is the ruling on praying behind someone who commits the act of the people of Lut, in detail?

Allah has legislated congregational prayer, and the most deserving of leading it are those who have memorized Allah's Book the most and are most knowledgeable of the Sunnah (definition). Imam Ahmad was of the opinion that the best reciter has precedence, while others held that the most knowledgeable of the rulings of prayer has precedence, because the people's need for fiqh (understanding) in the imamate is greater than their need for recitation. The imam should also possess justice, piety, devoutness, and good character.

As for praying behind a dissolute person (fasiq) or an innovator (sahib bid'ah), the jurists disliked it. They differed on its validity, holding two opinions: 1. Invalidity absolutely. 2. Differentiation: It is invalid if the dissoluteness is related to the prayer (such as abandoning a pillar or a condition), and it is valid if the dissoluteness is related to a limb (such as drinking alcohol or fornication), albeit with dislike; because anyone whose prayer is valid for himself, it is valid for others. This latter opinion is the most preponderant, and the Companions and the Successors acted upon it.
