Is a traveler who stayed for one day and then returned permitted to combine and shorten prayers, or to shorten prayers without combining them?

Scholars have differed regarding the duration after which a traveler must complete the prayer. However, they have agreed that a traveler who stays for only one day should shorten the prayer. As for combining prayers (jama‘), if the traveler is on the move, it is preferable to combine prayers, either by offering them early (jama‘ taqdim) or late (jama‘ ta’khir). If the traveler has settled, it is preferable not to combine prayers, but if they do, there is no harm. The correct view is that combining prayers is permissible for the traveler, and it is recommended for one who is on the move, while for one who has settled, it is permissible but not recommended.
