Is it permissible for a traveler to combine and shorten prayers for five days, and is it obligatory to re-perform the prayers that were combined and shortened on the day of arrival?

A traveler is permitted to avail themselves of the concessions of travel (combining and shortening prayers) if the travel distance reaches 83 km. These concessions cease upon arrival at the country of residence if the traveler intends to stay there for four full days or more. If the stay is for five days, combining prayers is not permissible after arrival, as the travel status is interrupted by this stay.

Some scholars have held the view that combining prayers is permissible out of necessity, citing the hadith of Ibn Abbas that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, combined prayers in Medina when there was neither fear nor rain, "desiring not to burden his Ummah."

Accordingly, if combining prayers on the day of arrival at the country of residence was due to hardship, harm, or to avoid burden, then there is no need to repeat the prayer. However, if it was for no reason, then whoever combined the prayers must repeat them, for "indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a [properly] timed ordinance."
