This custom is forbidden for both men and women. A woman removing her hymen with her hand is forbidden because it is the destruction of an organ without a just cause. Some scholars have explicitly stated that it is forbidden for a husband to remove his wife's hymen with his finger or similar means, and that doing so necessitates disciplinary punishment (ta'zir).
