How accurate is what was transmitted from Malik ibn Anas regarding the story of the dismissal of Khalid ibn al-Walid by Abu Bakr and and Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both—as narrated by al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar?

The aforementioned tradition was narrated by Ibn Asakir with a chain of reliable narrators from Zayd ibn Aslam. However, it is a Mursal (indirectly transmitted) and weak narration because Zayd did not meet Abu Bakr. Nevertheless, it is strengthened by the possibility that he heard it from his father, Aslam, and by other chains of narration that indicate Umar dismissed Khalid due to a difference in their ijtihad (independent reasoning) regarding financial dispositions, or out of his fear that the hearts of Muslims would become attached to Khalid instead of Allah. This is supported by theolther Mursal narrations from Ibn Sirin and Al-Hasan. Some scholars have inferred that Umar's dismissal of Khalid and appointment of Abu Ubaydah was to achieve a legitimate Islamic interest by creating a balance between strictness and leniency in leadership.
