Is it permissible for a man to live with his divorced wife in the same house to preserve the children?

If a man divorces his wife with the final divorce (third talaq), or divorces her with one or two talaqs and her 'iddah (waiting period) has ended, she becomes a stranger to him. It is not permissible for him to be in seclusion with her, touch her, or look at her. It is difficult to adhere to these Shariah regulations in one house, unless there is a private section for the divorced husband with its own facilities and entrance. Their presence in the same house, sharing an entrance and facilities, makes it very difficult to ensure safety from prohibited acts.

The Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas was asked about a case of a father and mother divorcing, and it answered that if the divorce was the third, it is not permissible for the mother to remain with him, unveil to him, or associate with him, because she has become a stranger to him. However, if it was the first or second talaq, the mother is considered to be divorced with a revocable divorce (talaq raj'i), and he can take her back as long as she is within her 'iddah. She has the rights of wives, and she serves your father and associates with him. But if she exits the 'iddah and he has not taken her back by word or by intercourse during the 'iddah, she becomes a stranger to him, and it is not permissible for him to remain with her or be in seclusion with her except with a new marriage contract.
