Should a young man take the next step to propose to a righteous and beautiful girl, even though she has little education and comes from a simple background, by bringing his mother to see the girl and give her opinion?
It is recommended to marry a religious girl of good character. If she is unlettered or has a low educational level, the husband can help her after marriage to elevate herself in matters of both religion and worldly affairs, and thereby earn a great reward. However, if the man feels that her illiteracy or low educational level will cause him distress or embarrassment that might lead him to wrong her, then it is advisable to seek someone else. There is no harm in seeking worldly matters in a wife, such as lineage, beauty, or wealth, provided that these are not the primary basis, but rather supplementary to religion. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, justified his rejection of Mu'awiyah due to his lack of wealth, and of Abu Jahm due to his harsh nature. All of these are matters supplementary to religion that may be considered as long as they do not conflict with it.
