What is the expiation for a Muslim who broke his fast for four consecutive years in Ramadan due to his ignorance of the rulings of fasting, despite his ability to fast, and fed poor people for the days he missed, and is now elderly, and should his guardian fast on his behalf after his death?

The length of the day in Ramadan is not considered an excuse for not fasting. The man erred by breaking his fast and giving out food instead of making up the missed days (qadaa'), and delaying it. The food he gave out is not sufficient. He must repent and seek forgiveness. If he is able to fast, he must make up the missed days along with an expiation (kaffara) of feeding one poor person for each day. If he dies before making up the days, his guardian should fast on his behalf or pay the expiation on his behalf. If he is unable to fast, he must pay two expiations for each day.
