What is the position of the layperson if the opinions of scholars differ and their status and knowledge are equal in his eyes, and how does he judge in this disagreement?

If a layperson is faced with differing fatwas and considers the muftis equally authoritative, he should choose the easier opinion, because Islamic law is built upon ease. It is not necessary to completely abandon the sayings of a scholar who has an error in doctrine, especially in matters of jurisprudence, for a jurist might be more proficient in fiqh than someone with sound doctrine. It is better for the questioner to strive in seeking knowledge to be able to weigh the opinions of scholars and free himself from the yoke of blind imitation.
