Is it permissible to pray in congregation in front of the imam when there is overcrowding in the mosque?

The majority of scholars hold that the prayer of a congregant (ma'mum) is invalid if they stand in front of the imam, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The imam is appointed to be followed." Following (i'timam) necessitates that the congregant be behind the imam.

However, some scholars believe that the prayer is valid with an excuse if the congregant cannot pray except in front of the imam, such as in cases of severe crowding. This view is based on Allah's saying: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity" (Quran 2:286), and His saying: "So fear Allah as much as you are able" (Quran 64:16). This opinion is the most balanced and preferred, as the obligations of prayer are waived due to an excuse.

Therefore, it is permissible for a congregant to stand in front of the imam in the funeral prayer if they cannot find any other place.
