The answer

In the two Sahih collections, it is narrated that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent word to a woman that her carpenter slave should make him some pieces of wood to deliver sermons upon. So he made him three steps. Then he commanded that it be put in place, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood upon it, glorified Allah, and prayed. Then he said: "I made this so that you may follow me and learn my prayer." There is no harm in making a pulpit with more than three steps, but if one limits it to three steps, following the example of the Prophet, it is better.
