What was the size of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) minbar, and is it preferable for it to have only three steps, as his minbar did?

The Prophet's (PBUH) minbar was small, made of wood, and consisted of three steps. He would deliver his sermon while standing on the second step and sit on the third. There was enough space between it and the wall for a sheep to pass through. The minbar remained in this state until Marwan added six steps from its base during Muawiyah's caliphate. Scholars consider the lengthening of minbars to be an innovation.
