Is it permissible to marry a girl whose family refused to marry her to a devout Muslim young man, on the pretext of differences in color and origin, knowing that they want to marry her to an irreligious person, and that the girl desires to marry the devout young man?

The standard of compatibility in marriage is religious commitment and character, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If someone whose religious commitment and character you approve proposes to your daughter, then marry her to him." Therefore, the guardians of the girl should marry her to someone possessing these qualities. If the guardian refuses to marry her to a compatible suitor, he is considered to be preventing her marriage, and the girl has the right to refer her case to the judiciary.

If the questioner is unable to marry this girl, he should seek another righteous woman and divert his thoughts from her, avoiding any emotional relationship with her, as she is a stranger to him.
