What is the ruling on a father's refusal to allow his daughter to marry a religious and moral young man, merely because the young man belongs to a certain family?

The woman's guardian is not permitted to prevent her marriage to a suitable man except for a legitimate Shar'i (Islamic legal) reason. Rather, he must marry her off if a suitable man proposes to her, based on the Almighty's saying: "And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing." (Quran 24:32), and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If someone whose religion and character you are pleased with proposes to you, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption." If the father refuses without a legitimate reason, an effort should be made to convince him through someone he respects. The matter can be referred to a judge, but this is not advisable due to the fear of corruption, such as a severance of ties. The preferable approach is to discuss the matter among the family, and there may be goodness and blessings in obeying the father.
