The question

What is incumbent upon one who broke her fast for 24 days in Ramadan after reaching puberty due to negligence, and only made up for the days of menstruation? And is it obligatory for her to make up the fasts (qada’) and offer expiation (kaffarah)? If so, what is its expiation? And is it obligatory to observe the order in making up the fasts, or is it permissible to make up this year’s obligatory fasts first, then what she missed from previous Ramadans? And is it permissible for her to break up the making up of the fasts (qada’ fasting) by doing it on weekends as long as she finishes what is due upon her before the next Ramadan?

The answer

One must make up for missed Ramadan fasts to absolve their responsibility. It is not permissible to delay making up for Ramadan fasts until the next Ramadan without a valid excuse. The expiation for this is a mudd of food for each day, and it is more cautious to give half a saa' (approximately 1.5 kilograms) for each day. One must hasten to make up for the missed days, and it is permissible to start in any year one wishes. Consecutive making up is not obligatory; rather, it is permissible to do it intermittently according to one's ability, though consecutive making up is preferable.
