What did Abu Ja'far al-Tabari mean by his statement: "Something with which Allah has specially endowed some of them, and favored them out of His generosity towards them," in the context of the bliss of the people of Paradise? What is its implication? Who are those whom Allah singles out and favors in Paradise? Is this favoritism a result of their deeds in this world? Are there any proofs from the Qur'an and Sunnah for the existence of favored people in Paradise? How does this reconcile with the principle that "entry into Paradise is by grace, and the levels within it are by justice"?

The dwellers of Paradise will vary in their ranks based on their deeds, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: «Indeed, the people of Paradise will look upon the inhabitants of the lofty chambers above them as you look upon a brilliant, distant star in the horizon from the East or West, due to the difference in rank between them.» And in another Hadith: «Indeed, in Paradise there are one hundred levels which Allah has prepared for those who strive in His cause.» This variation results from righteous deeds in this world, as Allah Almighty said: «And [they will be called], "This is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit for what you used to do."» And entering Paradise is by the grace and mercy of Allah, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: «None of you will enter Paradise by his deeds.» It was said: «Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?» He said: «Not even I, unless Allah covers me with His mercy and grace.»
