Is it permissible for a woman observing iddah to go out into the home garden—in lawful attire—to water plants and clean the garden, even with her neighbors overlooking, and is it permissible for her to watch television (religious channels)?
A woman observing ' (waiting period) due to the death of her husband is permitted to go out by day and by night to attend to her needs, and this includes going out to the house garden. As for a woman observing 'iddah due to an irreversible divorce, there is a difference of opinion regarding the obligation of observing ihdad (mourning). Some jurists are of the view that it is obligatory, others that it is recommended, while still others hold that it is not obligatory. The more preponderant view is that ihdad is only obligatory for a woman observing 'iddah due to the death of her husband. It is permissible for a woman observing 'iddah, whether due to death, irreversible divorce, or revocable divorce, to watch religious channels that are free from prohibitions.
