Is it permissible for the husband to take his wife back after a court divorce with a single pronouncement of divorce?

There is no disagreement among scholars that if a husband’s total divorces to his wife do not amount to three divorces, he may take her back into his marriage with a new contract that fulfills the conditions for a valid marriage. However, if the total divorces reach three, he is not permitted to take her back until she marries another husband and he consummates the marriage with her, then divorces her or dies.

If the divorce is revocable (raj’i), the husband may take his wife back without a new contract as long as her waiting period ('iddah) has not expired. If it is an irrevocable (ba'in) divorce, he cannot take her back except with a new contract.
