Is it permissible for my wife to abort her pregnancy, which is not more than 45 days old, for fear of a relapse in her health condition due to her inability to take medications for ulcerative colitis?

The preponderant opinion is that abortion is forbidden at any stage of the fetus's development. This prohibition becomes more emphatic after the ensoulment, as it involves taking a life that Allah has forbidden except by right. Nevertheless, abortion is permissible before ensoulment if there is a need for it, as taking a dispensation to alleviate hardship. It is advisable to consult trusted and experienced doctors regarding the wife's condition, not to rush the decision of abortion, and to make abundant supplications.
