ما الفرق بين المحبة لله والمحبة في الله؟

Love for the sake of Allah (الحب في الله) and love for Allah (الحب لله) have the same meaning, for both signify love for the sake of Allah. This is supported by prophetic traditions, such as the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Did you inform him?" He said: "No." He said: "Inform him." So he caught up with him and said: "Indeed, I love you for the sake of Allah (إني أحبك في الله)." He replied: "May the One for whose sake you loved me also love you," where the letter 'lam' (ل) was used instead of 'fi' (في). Similarly, in other narrations, it states: "Indeed, I love him for the sake of Allah (إني أحبه لله)." The Arabic Language Academy has clarified that both 'lam' (ل) and 'fi' (في) indicate the purpose and reason for love in this context, as in His (Allah's) saying: "He was harmed for the sake of Allah (أوذي في الله)," meaning for the sake of Allah.
