Have I committed a sin by resolving to divorce my wife after the problems she caused me and my discomfort with her, and her going to her family's home without my permission after our agreement?
There is no sin upon the husband for divorce if there is a need for it, but holding onto the wife is better than divorce. Divorce should be done with kindness and goodness. Allah Almighty says: "But if you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good," and His saying: "Retention with kindness or release with excellence."
It was not befitting for the husband to seek out his wife's faults, by preventing her from visiting her family and going out for her needs. And the wife must obey her husband in not going out except with his permission.
What was uttered by the husband as a word of divorce is a suspension of divorce upon the wife going to her family's house without his permission. So, if she goes without his permission, the divorce occurs. Resolving to divorce is not a divorce.
