What should I do about my husband’s request for a mubahala concerning a matter of which I am not certain, but which I highly expect to be true? And is it considered a mubahala if it is only between him and me, or is the presence of a group of people a prerequisite?

Trust and good faith should prevail between spouses, and they should avoid accusing each other, especially since the Holy Quran warns against ill-suspicion and harming believers. The wife should avoid situations that invite accusation. Mubahalah (mutual imprecation) is prescribed to distinguish the truthful from the false, and it should only be resorted to for a preponderant legitimate interest, knowing that it entails a curse upon the liar. Therefore, if you are not sure of your innocence, do not engage in Mubahalah. Scholars have not stipulated that Mubahalah must be performed in front of a gathering of people, unlike Li'an (oath of condemnation between spouses), for which some scholars have stipulated the presence of a group to publicize this ritual.
