Does applying kohl to the eye invalidate the state of ihram during Umrah or Hajj?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Using kohl during ihram does not invalidate it. If the kohl contains perfume, its use is forbidden except in cases of necessity, and a fidyah (expiatory offering) is obligatory according to the Malikis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis. As for the Hanafis, a sadaqah (charity) is due if the perfume was added to the kohl once or twice, and a fidyah is due if it exceeds that.

If the kohl does not contain perfume, it is disliked according to the Hanbalis and Shafi'is if it has a beautifying effect, such as ithmid, and there is no fidyah for it. However, if it does not have a beautifying effect, it is permissible without dislike. The Hanafis do not consider a fidyah due for it. The Malikis consider a fidyah due if its use is for non-necessity, and no fidyah if it is for medicinal purposes.
