A mother must be just among her children in giving gifts, unless there is a legitimate reason that permits preferring some over others. Among these reasons are: the poverty of one of them over the others, or singling out some due to their need or a virtue they possess such as knowledge, or withholding a gift from one of them due to their transgression or innovation.
