Fornication is one of the forbidden major sins that incur Allah’s wrath. Its preliminaries, such as looking, listening, speaking, touching, and walking (towards it), are considered forms ofzina, for which the perpetrator is sinful. However, merely thinking about fornication without firm resolve does not render the servant accountable. It is obligatory to cut off relationships with non-mahram women, avoid being alone with them, and lower one’s gaze. Whoever has not married should do so, and if unable, then he must fast, keep company with the righteous, attend gatherings of knowledge and remembrance, and distance himself from bad companions.
