It is not permissible for a brother to sign a contract with the institution where he studies, agreeing to pay interest upon delay in paying installments, because it is a usurious contract. However, he may enter into an agreement with them to pay the installment on time and strive diligently to fulfill this promise. If he is unable to pay by the due date and is compelled to pay the interest, and finds no alternative but to pay it, then there is no sin upon him, because he is in a state of necessity. The limit of necessity is that which is highly likely to cause a person to perish, or to incur an unbearable hardship due to it.
