What is the relationship between the worshipper and the worshipped in Verses 71-74 of Surat Ash-Shu'ara?

These verses appeared in the context of the Quran's narration of the story of Abraham (peace be upon him), where Allah Almighty commanded him to recite his story to the polytheists of Quraish. He was denouncing what his father and his people used to worship from idols. And he asks them in astonishment and denunciation: What do you worship? Do they hear you when you call upon them, or do they benefit you or harm you? This is to alert their heedless minds that among the fundamentals of the relationship between the worshipper and the worshipped is that the worshipped hears the worshipper's supplication and has complete ability to benefit or harm him. This cannot be achieved by idols. Therefore, none is worshipped except the One who brought into existence from nothingness and guided from error.
