It is forbidden for a pilgrim in the state of to trim or remove his nails. If he removes more than two nails, a full (expiation) becomes obligatory upon him, which is fasting for three days, or feeding six poor people, or sacrificing a sheep. However, if he removes fewer than three nails, he must give a mudd of food for each nail. A mudd is estimated at seven hundred grams. If he repeats trimming his nails before atoning for the previous instance, only one expiation is due upon him. If he fiddles with his nails without removing anything, there is no penalty upon him.
