What is the ruling on the follower (ma'mum) trailing the imam during the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw), where the imam gives one salutation to his right after the tashahhud, then prostrates for forgetfulness, and thereafter recites the tashahhud and gives two salutations, knowing that the followers do not give the first salutation? And is this method considered correct?
The Hanafi school of thought, which is the predominant legal school in India and Asian countries, holds that the prostration of forgetfulness ( al-sahw) should be performed after the salutation () in all cases, whether the forgetfulness was due to an addition or an omission. It is preferable to perform it after the first salutation. According to them, the method is to make one salutation, then say the takbir and perform two prostrations, then make a salutation after each prostration, then recite the and make the final salutation. The follower (ma'mum) must follow the imam in the prostration of forgetfulness after the salutation. As for the latecomer follower (ma'mum masbuq), he does not make the salutation with the imam, but waits for him until he performs the prostration of forgetfulness and then prostrates with him. Afterwards, he stands up to complete what he missed.
