The answer

It is recommended to combine salutations and prayers when supplicating for prophets and messengers, based on the statement of Ibn Al-Qayyim and on Quranic verses that mention peace be upon them, and on the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Send prayers upon Allah's prophets and messengers, for Allah sent them just as He sent me." This combination is particularly emphasized for our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). As for supplicating for them with what might imply deficiency, such as forgiveness and mercy, scholars have elaborated on this. Meanwhile, it is recommended to supplicate for the companions and others with "رضي الله عنه" (may Allah be pleased with him/them), according to the more preponderant opinion.
