What is the ruling on mixing and speaking with girls at university and in university housing?

"It has been previously explained that it is not permissible to study in mixed-gender universities except out of dire necessity, and it is not permissible for young men and women to reside in shared university accommodation due to the immense indecencies and evils it causes. Allah the Almighty has clarified how to speak with women when necessary, saying: 'And when you ask [his women] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.' The fundamental principle in a man addressing an unrelated woman is that it should be only to the extent of need and from behind a partition, free from softness of speech and private seclusion, and it should not incite temptation."
