Is mixing (of genders) in universities forbidden, and if so, what do you advise me, knowing that I am in my first year at university and only learned of this matter after enrolling?

A Muslim must be cautious about mixing with foreign women, as it leads to forbidden gazing and conversation that can lead to corruption. Allah has commanded believing men and believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade private seclusion with a foreign woman and entering upon women. It is necessary to block all means that lead to the forbidden. While acknowledging the importance of knowledge and the necessity of certification, the questioner should try to enroll in a college where men and women do not mix. If he cannot find such a place, then the seating arrangement should be segregated, with men in the front and women behind them, while being careful to avoid private seclusion or touching a woman who is not lawful for him.
