What is the ruling on a mother abusing her child through beating and verbal abuse? What is the ruling on a son preventing his mother from beating and verbally abusing him? What is the ruling on a son declaring his mother an apostate due to her uttering words considered disbelief? And what is the ruling on a mother cursing her son after he has declared her an apostate?

Islam has عظّم (exalted) the rights of parents, associating them with the right of Allah. It commanded kindness and humility towards them, and forbade harming them, even with the word "Uff" (a word of annoyance). It also enjoined thanking them and accompanying them with goodness, even if they are disbelievers. The Prophet, peace be upon him, prioritized honoring them over jihad, making it one of the best deeds. He equated disobedience to them with polytheism (shirk) with Allah, and prioritized the mother's right over the father's due to women's weakness and because disobedience to them is more heinous. Ill-treatment by parents does not justify disobedience to them; rather, they must be accompanied with goodness, even if they are disbelievers. If the mother is a disbeliever, she should be advised with gentleness and kindness. The concept of independence and freedom in exchange for mutual respect is not suitable in dealing with parents. One should avoid everything that angers the mother, and be warned against declaring a specific person to be a disbeliever.
