What is the recompense for whoever accuses a man of a vile deed, or accuses chaste men of evil?

Protecting the honor of Muslims and safeguarding their dignity is a religious imperative. Islam forbids the spread of indecency among believers and warns those who love for it to spread of painful punishment in this world and the hereafter. Whoever accuses a man of a foul deed, or accuses chaste people of evil, if he explicitly imputes fornication to them, he deserves the Hadd punishment for slander (eighty lashes). As for insinuation (ta'rid), the narrations from Ahmad differ regarding the necessity of the Hadd punishment. It is narrated from him that the Hadd is not necessary, and this is the view of a group of jurists. It is also narrated from him that it is necessary, and this is what Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, did when he lashed someone who said: "I am not a fornicator, nor is my mother a fornicator," insinuating about his companion.
